Awesome show! The best of this first US week. DC happens to be first gig with a standing audience, that makes the difference. Jamie really enjoyed playing at 9:30 Club (it was his 4th time in this venue)!
Check that setlist:

Don't stop the music
I'm all over it
Get your way
One of those things
Photograph
Not while I'm around
Frontin
We Run Things
What a difference a day makes
There are the days (I got a woman/I feel fine)
Mind Trick
I get a kick (unplugged w/ Chris)
Mixtape
Gran Torino
Cry me a river (unplugged in the audience)
All at sea
Wind cries Mary

I can't believe I just wrote a long, rave review - and my BlackBerry ate it! Oh well, a shorter version then.

I agree with Olivier - SPECTACULAR gig!!! The venue DOES make a HUGE difference - and the 930 is a gem of a venue. I had my favorite spot - at the edge of the stage, right at the piano - for me, it's all about being able to watch Jamie's hands on the keys - and so I participated in the best show I've seen since Jamie played the 930 Club in October 2006.

Yes indeed, look at that setlist! With the new band, as I'd mentioned before the show to Olivier, I'd figured I'd never hear Frontin again, but also said I'd love to hear Jamie play it solo - and OMG, but he DID, with piano slapping, some gorgeous different chords, harp strums, rhythm changes, and possibly the most dynamic vocal I've ever heard him bring to the song.

Tonight, Jamie was ON FIRE, with an energy and electricity I haven't heard from him since the tour 4 years ago.

The concert debut oif Not While I'm Around saw tears rolling down my cheeks. We Run Things was amazing. Mind Trick! And Get Your Way with no samples, just played live. I Get a Kick solo with Chris on standup bass was much hotter than I'd heard earlier in the week.

I could go on and on but I'm wiped. I will say this gig positively buried any doubts I might have harbored about whether Jamie was still truly into performing: given the right conditions, most decidedly the kind of venue that can really energize and inspire him, and he is still without a doubt the most electrifying performer I have ever seen, any time, anywhere.

Perhaps for me, from now on, count me out of the stuffy, fussy concert halls - they clearly do nothing for Jamie, and as a consequence, nothing much for the audience. But count me most joyously, ecstatically IN whenever Jamie plays the 930 or other standing-only general admission venues, because there, no star burns hotter than Jamie. I feel privileged, awestruck to have been there tonight.

(Even if they did confiscate my camera before the show so no pics tonight - in the end, no matter, better there with no pics than to have missed that magnificent show.)

I get a kick

I get the boot
She gives me a kick
I get a kick
She gives me the boot
I get the boot
She gives me a kick
I get a kick
She gives me the boot
I get the boot
She gives me a kick

... out of you!!!!!

The best version I've ever heard!

Don't need to add anything to Olive and MMK's excellent summaries other than to agree that there is no doubt that Jamie feeds of the enrgy of a close-in crowd.

That said, musically, he played some of the best piano I've ever seen him play at Carnegie Hall. But last night at the excellent 930 Club, he blew everyone away. I brought 3 friends with me - one of which is a hard core music fan like myself but who had never seen JC live.

After the show, Dave was in full amazement and could not believe what he heard/saw. As much as I wished I could have shot some video, I am glad I didn't as I could not take my eyes off the stage for a second.

Jamie just seemed completely at ease and quite happy - marriage must be suiting him well and the crowd gave him a steady stream of roaring energy to work with.

GREAT SHOW.

ps He also performed, much to my great joy, "You And Me Are Gone" which is a SLAMMING tune. Pure azz-kickin pulsing R&B

MMK---Not While I'm Around makes me tear up on the CD--can't imagine how I'd be hearing it live. Sad to have missed that show--and that song. But, ask anyone--Photograph brings tears to my eyes... Very Happy

Indeed they did. A young woman employed by the club heard me complaining about it to Olivier and tried to tell me "it's at the artist's request"; I cut her off, saying, "Honey, I won't make a fuss, but don't tell me it's Jamie because I know it's not." Whatever. As I say, I was just so glad to be there!

Not While ... was indeed gorgeous.

If my review is "great," it's only because of the great show that inspired it. Laughing

I love it when they come out with that s**t, it's like.. "trust me, I KNOW he really doesn't give a crap. Do you wanna know how many thousands of Jamie pictures I've taken in the past 6 years?" Laughing

Hilarious - I keep a selection of my favorite Jamie gig shots on my iPod, and for a moment I actually was tempted to whip it out and show her, but figured it wasn't worth it because, as I said to Olivier, "It's not like I don't have hundreds of Jamie photos taken from exactly this vantage point already!" Laughing

You may be joking but still you speak the truth, as no mere words of mine could do justice to the excellence of that gig.

I SOOOOOOO hope that on his next tour through the States, he plays more venues like the 930 - I'd die if he came back to Roseland in NYC - Jamie, are you listening? Repeat after me: Roseland, NOT Town Hall; Roseland, NOT Town Hall ... that's right, keep it going ... !
